What triggers a Text Alert?

Text Alerts are triggered when a place is located:

  • within a National Weather Service Warning Area
  • within the USGS Approximate Impact Radius for a Magnitude 4.0 or greater earthquake
  • within 0.5 miles of a Known Damage / Local Storm Report location
  • within 5 miles of a Wildfire boundary

National Weather Service Watches, Advisories, and Special Weather Statements are not available by text.

What triggers an Email Alert?

In addition to all Text Alerts listed above, Email Alerts also include:

  • within a National Weather Service Watch, Advisory, or Special Weather Statement area

How many texts should I expect?

Every place is different regarding the number of texts you should expect. Some places will be as low as a handful per year, while other places might approach 200 per year. It really depends on the severity of the weather in the area. We provide a "snooze" button that stops texts for a 24-hour period if storms in the area are generating multiple texts.

Why did I just get a bunch of texts or emails at once?

In some circumstances, you might have 3 or 4 places in the same area. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning that spans multiple counties may cover several of the places in your watchlist. Each individual place will generate a text or email. To reduce the number of alerts, you might consider snoozing places that you already know are in the path of a storm, or turn off alerts for places that are in close proximity to each other.

Why did I get 3 texts for the same place at the same time?

There are times when the National Weather Service will release multiple warnings simultaneously for a given area. For example, you might get a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, a Flash Flood Warning and a Tornado Warning at the same time. If you feel like you are getting repeated texts, please contact support@lightsonalert.com as soon as possible to help remedy the issue.

Why can't I get text alerts for watches, advisories, etc?

The National Weather Service is good at their job. They send out watches and advisories regularly. In an attempt to reduce the "noise" caused by the low-risk texts, watches, advisories, etc are available by email only.
